Examples of Stewardship

WORK PLAN OBJECTIVES AND PROTECTION PRACTICES

Aquifer Recharge Areas | Promote and monitor practices that:
Avoid or minimize the risks of groundwater contamination from agricultural activities, consistent with County and state water quality standards
Maintain or improve groundwater recharge and ensure sufficient infiltration of water at the land’s surface to sustain aquifers, maintain base flows in fish-bearing streams, and maintain wetland water levels.

Examples Include:

  • Identify where groundwater resources are located.

  • Analyze the susceptibility of the natural setting where groundwater occurs.

  • Inventory existing potential sources of groundwater contamination.

  • Classify the how vulnerable the groundwater is to contamination events.

  • Designate areas that are most at risk to contamination events.

  • Protect groundwater by minimizing activities and conditions that pose contamination risks.

  • Ensure that contamination prevention plans and best management practices are followed.

  • Create irrigation stations to manage water usage.

Frequently Flooded Areas | Promote and monitor practices that:
Maintain or reduce impervious surfaces
Avoid permanent unmitigated alterations to floodplain areas that increase net floodwater displacement in the watershed
Maintain and/or enhance floodplain area functions and connectivity of streams to their floodplains

  • Bank stabilization projects

  • Conservation Cover

  • Tree/Shrug Establishment

  • Riparian Forest Buffer

  • Fencing

  • Watering Facilities

  • Livestock Pipelines

  • Heavy Use Area Protection

  • Forest Understory Management

  • Mulching

Wetlands | Promote and monitor practices that:
Maintain (no net loss) extent of baseline wetland functions and values on lands used for agricultural activities in each watershed
Avoid unmitigated alterations to wetlands
Maintain or increase suitable native plant communities in wetlands and associated riparian protection areas
Implement conservation practices for wetland management, creation, or enhancement

  •  Riparian Forest Buffer
  • Tree/Shrub Establishment
  • Restoration and Management of Rare and Declining Natural Communities
  • Streambank Stabilization
  • Conservation Cover
  • Fencing
  • Wetland Wildlife Habitat Management
  • Wetland Creation
  • Heavy Use Area Protection
  • Integrated Pest Management
  • Watering Facilities
  • Streambank Stabilization
  • Forage and Biomass Planting
  • Critical Area Planting
  • Mulching
  • Integrated Pest Management

Wildlife Habitat | Promote and monitor practices that:
Maintain (no net loss) extent of baseline wetland functions and values on lands used for agricultural activities in each watershed
Avoid unmitigated alterations to wetlands
Maintain or increase suitable native plant communities in wetlands and associated riparian protection areas
Implement conservation practices for wetland management, creation, or enhancement

Examples Include:

  • Conservation Cover

  • Tree/shrub Establishment

  • Restoration and Management of Rare and Declining Habitats

  • Fish and Wildlife Structure

  • Riparian Forest Buffer

  • Upland Wildlife Habitat Management

  • Watering Facilities

  • Fencing

  • Heavy Use Area Protection

  • Livestock Pipeline

  • Forest Understory Management

  • Mulching

  • Critical Area Planting

  • Streambank Stabilization

  • Forage and Biomass Planting

  • Integrated Pest Management

  • Stream Stabilization

Geologically Hazardous Area | Promote and monitor practices that:
Maintain or reduce erosion and sediment loads. Focus efforts in watersheds with water quality impairments and Total Maximum Daily Load allocations for sediment.
Stabilize steep slopes.
Avoid compaction of soil.
Avoid disturbing top and toe of steep slopes.
Avoid irrigating unstable slopes.
